A New Jersey appeals court has reversed a $260,000 judgment for a family whose son fell to his death from a dorm at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Authorities say the 21-year-old junior from Sudbury, Mass., fell in 2005 after drinking heavily.
His parents sued, contending that the school's alcohol policies were inadequate and weren't properly enforced.
A state court found the student and the school equally liable and awarded the student's parents $260,000.
Today's appellate ruling held that FDU was protected by a law that limits liability for charitable, religious and educational institutions in some circumstances.
The family's lawyer says he may appeal.
