LOS ANGELES – Documents show the U.S. Forest Service ordered powerful firefighting airplanes on the first night of a deadly wildfire near Los Angeles in August then canceled them.
Three air tankers were reordered later that day as part of the agency's attack on the Station Fire, but that resulted in a delay from their original arrival time.
The agency had no comment Monday but has previously defended its actions.
A government report last month found the wildfire raged out of control because it jumped into inaccessible terrain, not because of how the Forest Service used firefighters or aircraft.
The fire killed two firefighters and blackened 250 square miles. It was the largest ever in Los Angeles County.
