California Police Fatally Shoot Bank Robbery Suspect

An accused bank robber held three bank employees hostage and shot two customers before police shot and killed him in a rural Northern California town.

Shasta County sheriff's Capt. Mike Ashmun says two SWAT team deputies shot down the 47-year-old male suspect around noon on Tuesday.

That ended a three-hour standoff that sent bystanders ducking for cover in Burney, a town of 3,000 people 200 miles north of Sacramento.

The suspect shot two customers, who were treated for moderate injuries. Deputies said he also shot at them during the standoff, shattering the front windows of the U.S. Bank branch.

He took three female bank employees hostage, dragging one into the bank vault. They were not injured.

The man's name was not immediately released.
