EL CERRITO, Calif. – A 14-year-old boy is facing charges and two school officials are on administrative leave after officials say a 12-year-girl was raped in a stairwell of an El Cerrito school.
El Cerrito police say the girl was attacked at the Portola Middle School around 2:40 p.m. Thursday.
Police Cmdr. Michael Regan says the incident was witnessed by another student who walked into the stairwell and reported it to a school resources officer.
The suspect was arrested Thursday night at his home. He was charged Monday in Juvenile Court with rape and false imprisonment. Police have not released his name.
A spokeswoman for the West Contra Costa Unified School District says the school's principal and assistant principal have been placed on paid administrative leave while police investigate.
