A medical examiner says a 30-year-old man died of hypothermia in his home, where the electricity had been shut off for lack of payment.

Deputy Boone County Medical Examiner Ariel Goldschmidt says 30-year-old Nathan G. Curry had been dead more than 24 hours when police found his body on Friday.

The Columbia Tribune reports that city records show Curry's electricity had been shut off Sept. 30.

City Finance Department Director Lori Fleming says the city assumed Curry had abandoned the account because he did not make any effort to set up a payment agreement after electricity was shut off.

She says Curry's account was for water and electric, not for electric heat.
