Creative Perks Replacing Holiday Bonuses

NEIL CAVUTO, HOST: Anyway, lots of companies cutting back on bonuses this year. Now they're scraping up ways to pump up employee morale. Proforma executives are promising to scrape snow from their workers' cars. They are in Cleveland, so let's just say they are going to be busy. And that is not all the creative perks they're offering.

Proforma founder Greg Muzzillo here to explain. Joining him is employee Kelsey Anthony.

Welcome to both you.

(CROSSTALK)

GREG MUZZILLO, FOUNDER, PROFORMA: Hi, Neil.

CAVUTO: Greg, it's a novel idea. What made you do it? You probably looked in the till, there wasn't money for bonuses. So, what made you come up with this idea?

MUZZILLO: Well, Neil, we are actually shaping up to have our best year ever next year, but this year was difficult. We saw a huge downturn at the beginning of the year.

Fortunately, we have seen a lot of growth in our organization. We're a franchise company. And Proforma has recruited a record number of franchise owners. So, next year looks like it's going to surely be our best year ever.

CAVUTO: What do you franchise? What — what is your company about?

MUZZILLO: Our franchise owners sell printing and promotional products as a business-to-business basis.

CAVUTO: OK.

MUZZILLO: We have 700 franchise offices in North America.

CAVUTO: I gotcha.

MUZZILLO: So, we are very excited about next year. We are excited that we didn't have to eliminate any positions or cut anybody's pay.

And we said, well, how can we just keep the staff morale high through this year get to what is going to be our best year ever next year? And we came up with some fun ideas like scraping the windshields off, and serving breakfast to the staff, and having some fun, and getting to next year.

CAVUTO: Kelsey, what are you getting out of this?

KELSEY ANTHONY, PROFORMA EMPLOYEE: I am getting my car scraped. I mean, it is cold in Cleveland. And you know how miserable it can be to leave the office after a hard day of work to a snow — or a car that is buried in snow. So, I am getting my boss scraping my car.

CAVUTO: So, how long has that been going on?

MUZZILLO: Well, we have not had to start yet because we have had actually a mild fall. And most of the executive team is...

CAVUTO: That's what I was going to say.

See, Kelsey, ain't that killer, though. You agree to this.

CAVUTO: It doesn't snow. It's like Miami.

MUZZILLO: We're praying for global warming this year.

(LAUGHTER)

CAVUTO: And you are not getting a bonus. You are not getting your car scraped. And it is not working out for you.

(LAUGHTER)

ANTHONY: Did you say — was that to Greg?

CAVUTO: That was to you, Kelsey, because you don't seem to be getting much out of this deal.

ANTHONY: Oh. Oh, I am getting tons out of it.

I mean, as Greg mentioned, we have not had any pay cuts and any layoffs. So, it's great that the employees are kind of — or the executives are getting creative in ways to reward us. So, we are getting a lot of out it.

CAVUTO: Well, no, I kid you both, but I actually think it's a very cute, novel idea. And it shows something on the part of management, that you care for your workers, which is a concept.

But, Greg, I could ask a guy like you, you should be running the company, and not scraping cars, if you want things to get better.

(LAUGHTER)

CAVUTO: So, if I am those workers, I'm going to be saying, I would like you doing your job, boss.

MUZZILLO: Well, our job is servicing our 700 franchise owners out in the field.

And, at Proforma, the job in our support center here in Cleveland is to be of service to our 700 Proforma franchise owners. So, it is good for us to also lead by example and to show our support center staff what service looks like.

So, actually, I do think it's doing my job by showing and leading the way, being of service to our support staff, and — and helping them see what it means to just be of service, because that is the business that we are in at Proforma.

CAVUTO: All right, you going to do this next year, or you going to give them money next year?

(LAUGHTER)

MUZZILLO: The hats and gloves are ready here, Neil, so we're ready for action.

(LAUGHTER)

CAVUTO: All right.

(LAUGHTER)

CAVUTO: Well, you know, it is a very novel, cute idea, guys.

ANTHONY: Thank you.

CAVUTO: And I'm hoping for a blizzard. I'm just hoping for a blizzard.
