Two workers died Tuesday in a crane accident at the construction site of Poland's national football stadium, a venue being built in Warsaw for the 2012 European Championship, officials said.

An elevator on the crane crashed to the ground from a height of about 50 feet, fire department spokesman Pawel Fratczak said. He said one man was killed immediately.

The other man died later in a hospital, Warsaw police spokesman Tomasz Oleszczuk said. Both men were inside the elevator when it crashed. The cause of the accident was under investigation.

Poland is building the national stadium in Warsaw, as well as roads and other infrastructure, to prepare for Euro 2012, which it will co-host with Ukraine.
