British police have released a shocking picture of a "good Samaritan" who was beaten up while trying to stop a group of youths from stealing a bike.

Andrew Folan was left with a heavily bruised eye and swelling to his head after challenging the mob of five or six teenagers.

The 40-year-old intervened when the group tried to take a BMX bike from an alleyway in Walsgrave Road, Coventry.

He received multiple injuries in the attack and needed hospital treatment.

Detective Constable Mark Olden, from West Midlands Police, said: "Mr. Folan was playing the role of a good Samaritan and was subjected to a vicious attack for his trouble.

"This was an unprovoked attack and we would urge anyone with information or any witnesses to contact the police."
