Authorities say a woman was fatally stabbed in her apartment immediately after two police officers left her home following a domestic violence report.

Police spokesman Officer Bruce Borihanh said Thursday the officers had been responding to a domestic violence call in the Mid-City area at about 11:30 p.m. the night before. They were in their patrol car completing their report when they heard screams.

The officers ran back to the apartment and saw a man stabbing the woman. The officers shot him to death.

Borianh says there had been no sign of the attacker when the officers were in the apartment the first time.

Detective Gus Villanueva says the man may have reached the second-floor apartment from the roof, then climbed in a bathroom window.
