A Muslim Bosniak party says attempts to change the country's constitution during two days of internationaly-mediated talks have failed.

European and U.S. mediators insist that the process initiated during the talks could ultimately produce an agreement.

The talks which ended Wednesday were a crucial attempt to take the country out of political deadlock and closer to EU membership. Revamping the constitution is considered essential if Bosnia is to become a fully functioning country.

Senior U.S and EU officials had presented a package of proposed constitutional changes to Bosnia's most influential leaders. But they proved to be too drastic for some and too minor for others.
