South Carolina Private School Closes Over Flu Concerns

A private school in South Carolina worried about a flu epidemic has closed after hundreds of students called in sick.

Laurence Manning Academy headmaster Spencer Jordan says in a message on the school's Web site that the private school is closed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Multiple media outlets reported the school made the decision after about 290 of its 1,000 students called in sick on Tuesday, citing flu-like symptoms.

Jordan says a third of those students have been diagnosed with Type A Influenza. The rest have various cold symptoms.

He says the school has no confirmed cases of swine flu. Officials say maintenance crews are wiping down all the surfaces, desks and door knobs.

Classes are to resume Monday.
