A Detroit police officer died after her husband allegedly shot her outside a suburban library Tuesday morning and then turned the gun on himself, according to MyFOXDetroit and other media.

Witnesses told Canton, Mich., police that the husband — also a Detroit cop — shot his wife and then himself about 9:15 a.m. in the parking lot of the Canton Public Library, MyFOXDetroit reported.

Sources told the station that the couple had been fighting throughout the weekend and their fellow police officers had been called to the house to intervene.

Police say the woman was dead on arrival at a hospital, while the man is on life support. No names were released.

A police spokesman, Sgt. Mark Gajeski, told the Detroit Free Press that the woman was on her way to the police department near the library when the shooting occurred.

Canton is a suburb of Detroit.
