BUDAPEST, Hungary – Prosecutors in Hungary have questioned suspected Nazi war criminal Sandor Kepiro about the murder of civilians in Serbia during World War II.
Gabriella Skoda of the Budapest Chief Prosecutor's Office says 95-year-old Kepiro was questioned Tuesday about allegedly relaying orders as a Hungarian officer to soldiers who killed four civilians in Novi Sad, Serbia, in 1942. In all, some 1,200 Serb and Jewish civilians were killed by Hungarian forces who raided the region in the wake of the Nazi occupation of Yugoslavia.
In 1944, Kepiro was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his part in those atrocities, but the conviction was later annulled.
The Wiesenthal Center has accused him of playing an active role in the "mass murder of at least hundreds of civilians" there.
