Valerie Post’s pregnancy seemed fine one minute, and the next she was literally fighting to stay alive.

The 24-year-old, who delivered a healthy baby girl via Caesarean section August 7, is in a medically induced coma after doctors confirmed she has the H1N1 virus, Tampa Bay Tribune reported.

Pregnant women are especially vulnerable to the effects of the H1N1 virus, as are their unborn children, doctors have said for the past few months. Pregnant women will be the first to receive the H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available in October.

Post’s husband, Bryan, 23, said Valerie’s condition has worsened since he rushed her to the hospital when she complained of a sore throat, backache and slight fever, and the baby was in distress.

The baby, Nora, was delivered, and doctors say H1N1 is no longer Valerie Post’s primary threat: The young mother is on a respirator, she has had severe swelling, seven blood clots and the wound from her C-section has opened up.

The Posts have another daughter, Trinity, who is 16 months old.
