A Newport News man has drowned after sneaking into a community pool.
Newport News police spokeswoman Holly McPherson says 35-year-old Stephen Hines and an unidentified friend scaled a fence surrounding the pool early Sunday morning and went for a swim. The friend later got out of the pool and saw Hines under the water.
McPherson says the friend pulled Hines out of the pool and ran to a nearby house to call police.
Hines was pronounced dead at a local hospital at about 4 a.m. Sunday.
McPherson says both Hines and the friend had been drinking before they went into the pool.
