Although autopsy results following DJ AM aka Adam Goldstein's sudden death on Friday came back inconclusive, he was found in his NYC apartment surrounded by drug paraphernalia — leading his close friends to believe that he lost his life in a one-off relapse that he fought so hard for so long to overcome.

"It was a one time relapse that was a mistake," a close pal told Tarts. "I hate that people are going to remember him for this and for not only revolutionizing DJing and his amazing spirit. I just spoke to him a few days ago and he was so excited to have thrown the first pitch at the METS game last weekend. He was such a special person."

The idea that Goldstein (who had been alcohol-free for 11 years and drug-free for 4 years) would turn back to substances during a hard time (his 22-year-old girlfriend Hayley Wood had just ended the relationship and he was suffering) came as a great shock even to chemical addiction specialist Marty Brenner who was not only a very good friend of Goldstein's but his mentor through his many years of sobriety. According to Brenner, the famous DJ was 100 percent committed to staying clean and during their last interaction just a week ago he seemed like he was very much in control.

"Adam gave me a big hug and a kiss, he didn't look like he was struggling but this is a crazy disease. It's about looking good, alot of people have to look good in the entertainment business. It's about ... having a smile on your face, and telling everyone you're okay, but if you're not being real and honest, this is how you end up," Brown told Tarts. "And that's why I'm sitting here and I can't understand this. I have no idea what happened. He was in perfect condition and perfect health, everything. The thing about this disease that's terrible is it can get you into a state of depression in 2 seconds where the only thing in that one moment, is where you feel the world is going to end, you feel like you're a piece of crap, and you don't even want to live."

In the same eerie vein as Michael Jackson (whose drug problem was sparked after being burned in a 1984 Pepsi commercial), AM apparently never recovered from last year's plane crash in which he was severely burned and deeply traumatized. Over the last couple of months, friends noticed he had become distant.

"He wasn't at AA meetings as regularly as he used to be," said our source. "He used to be there at least 2 or 3 times a week, but lately something wasn't quite right."

Goldstein's tragic passing has certainly rocked the entertainment world — his fellow plane crash survivor Travis Barker twittered on Saturday that his "brother is gone."

"i love u and miss u, i'll never forget all the good times we had," Barker tweeted. "i'll never forget everything we've been thru and every time i play the drums i'll think of you. U were an amazing friend/DJ/human being. Rest In Peace my brother, this really f***s me up."

Similarly, AM's ex-girlfriend Mandy Moore said she still can't comprehend the tragedy.

"I am absolutely heartbroken. For those of us lucky enough to have known him, Adam radiated a contagious exuberance for life and also personified the very definition of a true friend," Moore told Tarts in a statement. "To say that he will be missed beyond words is an understatement. My heart goes out to his loved ones."

And while his former fiancé Nicole Richie hasn't taken to Twitter to express her pain, a source told Tarts she is extremely shocked and upset.

"When they were together they were very cool, very happy and upbeat. Nicole and Adam had such a close relationship for so long and even though they're not together anymore, they had a close connection," our source added. "She is hurting."

Jerry O’Connell is the proud father of twin girls Dolly Rebecca Rose and Charlie Tamara Tulip, but the “Stand By Me” star couldn’t actually stand by his wife with his eyes open during their birth last December.

“I was there for the birth but I did not look though. A friend of mine said ‘listen, I’ve looked so I’m giving you a piece of advice - I don’t think you should look’ so I didn’t actually see anything,” O’Connell told Tarts at the Much Love Animal Rescue Dinner in Hollywood on the weekend.

But when we asked if his swimsuit supermodel wife Rebecca Romijn was back to her perfect pre-pregnancy body, he did hesitate a little.

“Yes… yes I guess she is. She looks great, back into the pilates,” O’Connell said. “She’s stopped breast-feeding so it slows down a little, I don’t know the particulars. But we had a very large lunch today and we had dessert so I don’t think she’s dieting per se.”

Romijn has infact bounced back to work and is busy filming ABC’s new supernatural series “Eastwick”, prompting O’Connell to enroll in law school.

“I got the short straw for not working so I’m going to grad school part-time. I can do my homework and watch the kids at the same time,” he added. “But Rebecca misses the girls a lot when she’s at work so I bring them around and let them bother her on set.”
