School officials say a shirtless man hijacked an Atlanta public school bus with about a dozen students on board and then jumped out, letting it crash into a ditch.

Atlanta Public Schools spokesman Keith Bromery says the man jumped through a window Thursday afternoon, threw the bus driver out of the seat and took over the wheel. He says the man then jumped out of the bus, leaving it without a driver.

He says most of the students jumped out of the bus as it slowly rolled down a hill, but one jumped in the driver's seat and unsuccessfully tried to stop it.

Bromery says two students were slightly injured when the bus crashed.

Witnesses said a bystander saw the crash and detained the suspect until police arrived. Police did not immediately return a phone call.
