1972 Cannibal Plane Crash Survivors to Lead Organ Donation Campaign

The survivors of a 1972 airplane crash in a remote area of the Andes who turned to cannibalism to stay alive are helping to raise awareness on the importance of organ donation, Agence France-Presse reports.

The 16 crash survivors, who spent 72 days on a remote mountain before they were rescued, are leading a government-run organ donor awarenss campaign in Uruguay, crash survivor Jose Luis "Coche" Inciarte told AFP.

The survivors plan to ask donors to make "a pact with life," similar to the one the plane crash survivors made 37 years ago that called for anyone who died in the mountains to allow themselves to be eaten so that the others could stay alive, Inciarte said.

The goal of the new campaign is to double the number of registered organ donors in Uruguay by late 2010.
