A day after staff cuts went into effect in a Maryland fire department, firefighters were left with no help when a fire broke out at their own station, MyFOXDC.com reported.

The fire, that began on one of the engines inside the station, started shortly after 2 a.m. Monday morning.

Two firefighters returning from a call were forced to put it out, because no one was on duty at a nearby fire station, MyFOXDC.com reported.

Staff cuts also eliminated a technician's job, who would have performed regular maintenance on the engine that caught fire.
