A 7-year-old Utah boy who took his family's car on a joyride to avoid going to church in the heat said Friday he doesn't plan to drive again any time soon.
Preston Scarbrough made an appearance on the "Today" show, and said he learned to drive by watching his mother and sister.
The child let his parents Daniel and Melanie Scarbrough do most of the talking during the interview on NBC.
Dispatchers in Plain City, Utah, received reports of a child driving recklessly last Sunday morning.
One witness said the boy drove through a stop sign, according to Weber County Sheriff's Capt. Clint Anderson. Anderson said two deputies caught up with Preston and tried unsuccessfully to stop the Dodge Intrepid.
The car reached 40 mph before Preston stopped in his driveway and ran into his house.
His father, Daniel, told the "Today" show that his son said, "Dad, the cops are outside" before going downstairs to hide in the basement.
Anderson said Preston told his dad that he jumped into the car and drove off because he didn't want to go to church in the hot weather.
“Later, he did tell us he wanted to know what it felt like to drive a car, so he did it,” Melanie Scarbrough added.
Police say they were impressed with the child's driving skills. No citations were issued against Preston or his family.
