A man once sentenced to death for kidnapping and murder is accused of kidnapping a father, his daughter and two small children from North Carolina.

Cherokee County, S.C. Sheriff Bill Blanton said Saturday that the suspect was hospitalized after he was shot by deputies following a chase into nearby woods. Blanton said one deputy suffered a minor scratch in the shootout.

Blanton said the suspect, 52-year-old Jerry Douglas Case of Gastonia, N.C., went into a convenience store near Gaffney, S.C., His captives started the car, drove off, and stopped in Blacksburg, S.C., about 10 miles northeast of Gaffney, and called 911.

Case was sentenced to death in 1986 for kidnapping and murdering a Tennessee taxi driver. In a 1992 retrial, he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was released from prison 16 years later.
