American student Amanda Knox, accused of murdering British student Meredith Kercher, told the courtroom ''ciao'' as her trial was adjourned for summer recess until September.

Knox, 22, is jointly charged with her former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, 25, of the sex killing of Kercher, 21, who was found semi naked and with her throat cut in her bedroom of the house she shared with Knox.

Prosecutors have told the court in Perugia where Kercher was killed that she died after refusing to take part in a drug-fueled sex party.

As she left court, Knox - escorted by prison guards - was asked what she thought of the two month break. She shrugged her shoulders and said ''ciao."

The trial began in January and the 80 prosecution witnesses finished giving evidence in May, while the defense had less than half that number and several have failed to appear.
