PEWAUKEE, Wis. – A 33-year-old man died over the weekend during the swimming portion of a triathlon in southeastern Wisconsin.
The victim was identified as Daniel Murray, of Milwaukee.
West Allis firefighter Steve Peterson was in a kayak assisting lifeguards in the middle of the race Sunday at Pewaukee Lake.
He says he saw Murray grabbing onto a lifeguard boat and then a flotation device. Then Peterson says Murray went under the water and he dove in.
Peterson and others pulled him out and lifeguards administered CPR, but the man couldn't be saved.
Pewaukee police Lt. Mark Flessert says it's not known if Murray had a medical condition that contributed to the incident.
