CARLISLE, Pa. – Police say a 9-year-old boy got his grandmother's shotgun, loaded it and shot his younger sister at close range.
State police spokesman Lt. Gib Morrissey said Monday the 6-year-old girl is at Penn State Hershey Medical Center and is expected to survive wounds to her left arm and torso.
Morrissey says the boy got the Remington 20-gauge shotgun from a gun case on Sunday morning and loaded it with a trap load before he shot his sister in their grandmother's home near Carlisle.
Police can't charge the boy with a crime because he's under 10 years old.
Morrissey says police are looking into whether the grandmother was negligent with the weapon.
