A Plantation man has been sentenced to 99 years in prison for attempted murder for repeatedly hitting his ex-girlfriend in the head with a sledgehammer.

A Broward judge announced 23-year-old Brandon Bishop's sentence Friday. He was convicted last month.

Prosecutors say Bishop attacked 22-year-old Jennifer McClary in August 2006 when she arrived at his home for a date. He pinned her to the floor and hit her with a sledgehammer at least six times.

Doctors didn't expect McClary to survive the attack, and she suffered severe brain damage.

Bishop had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. His attorney argued that he suffered from depression.
