Gunmen carried out attacks against federal police in at least six cities in drug-plagued Michoacan state, killing five officers.
The Michoacan state public safety department says gunmen attacked federal police offices and one hotel where agents were staying between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. Saturday, killing five officers and wounding nine.
The attacks appeared to be coordinated by the same gang, although officials would not confirm that, saying they were still investigating.
President Felipe Calderon's home state of Michoacan is at the center of his national campaign against drug cartels. Gangs have responded with unprecedented bloodshed. Drug violence has killed more than 11,000 people nationwide since 2006, when Calderon took office.
