HOUSTON – Investigators blame arson for two fires that damaged a Houston-area playground this month.
A neighbor on the morning of July 4 noticed part of the Kingwood playground at Foster Elementary School was on fire, with some plastic equipment melting.
George Brookover told KTRK-TV that he called 911 after noticing the fire as he went outside.
Investigators also are trying to determine who set fire inside a storage shed on July 2.
Foster Elementary PTA president Amy Bujnoch says it took two years to raise $60,000 to buy the playground equipment in 1998. She says replacing the equipment will cost about $80,000 and the playground was not insured.
Brookover says he and other grandparents enjoy taking their children to the playground and people used it "every day all year round."
