Police exchanged gunfire with people in a car that fled an accident in the Isla Verde tourist area Sunday, and found one man dead and a second wounded when they stopped the auto, Puerto Rican authorities said.

Police Commander Wally Matos said officers had been summoned by a report that the suspects' car had run into something around 8:30 a.m. The suspects shot at the arriving police and fled in a second car with officers in pursuit, Matos said.

It was not immediately clear where the getaway car came from, and police provided no other details. Matos said the officers involved were being interviewed.

Spokeswoman Yaira Rivera said that when officers managed to stop the fleeing car, they discovered one of its occupants had been killed by several bullets. A second was wounded the hip and taken into custody. Two other people in the car also were detained, she said.

Rivera originally had said a total of five people were in the car.
