Hundreds of Michael Jackson fans in South Africa have gathered to moonwalk and pay tribute to the late singer.

The diverse crowd on Friday included office workers on break, schoolchildren on holiday and Jackson impersonators sporting red satin jackets and fedoras.

Some fans emulated the hip-jutting moves that made Jackson famous to a soundtrack of hits such as "Billie Jean" and "Smooth Criminal."

A power failure knocking out the soundtrack for "Black or White" did not stop the crowd from carrying on singing.

Others watched and listened at the event on Johannesburg's Nelson Mandela Square.

Twenty-eight-year-old Siviwe Mazwana said Jackson is "the king and will always be the king."
