By 1970 the Vietnam War was near its end. America was turning the fight over to the South Vietnamese, but departure without victory is a dirty business. Even with the withdrawal underway thousands of new men were arriving for their tour of duty.
In April of 1970 the 101st Airborne Division, the famed Screaming Eagles, began to build a mountain top fortress or firebase know as Ripcord. Surrounded by rugged jungle it relied on a helicopter lifeline to get supplies in and the wounded out. Lurking in that jungle was a battle hardened North Vietnamese Army that outnumbered the Americans more than four-to-one.
The battle that followed was one of the bloodiest of the war. The politicians had already labeled the war a lost cause but, in the heat of battle the men of the 101st found a noble cause. They fought to save the man to the left and the man to the right. It was the bond of brotherhood and a chance to see home that motivated these men to fight like lions.
