Kenyan Security Forces Accused of Civilian Rape and Torture

A human rights group says Kenyan security forces tortured hundreds of civilians and raped at least a dozen women during a three-day operation to disarm militias in the country's remote northeast.

New York-based Human Rights Watch urged an inquiry into the October operation in the Mandera district.

The desolate and arid region near the borders of Somalia and Ethiopia sees frequent cross-border raids over dwindling resources.

Kenya's police spokesman had no immediate comment Monday on the allegations.
