A convicted scam artist who spent nearly 20 years as a fugitive hosted a lavish bar mitzvah for his son at the New York City jail.

A Correction Department spokesman confirmed that five staff members were disciplined over the Dec. 30 bash.

The bar mitzvah boy's father, Tuvia Stern, was accused in June 1989 of stealing $1.7 million through a pair of financial scams. He jumped bail and fled to Brazil with his wife and five children.

Stern was detained in 2006 while trying to enter England and was extradited to the United States last year.

The bar mitzvah was reported in The New York Post on Thursday. About 60 guests attended, and Stern was allowed to use his own kosher caterer.
