SANTA FE, N.M. – New Mexico authorities are searching for one of their own helicopters that went missing shortly after its crew rescued a lost hiker.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Peter Olson says the agency lost contact with the State Police helicopter about 9 p.m. Tuesday night.
The helicopter had just picked up a lost female hiker in the mountainous Santa Fe Ski Area. Also on board were a pilot and a spotter. The pilot reported trouble in his last radio transmission.
Olson says state police, search-and-rescue crews and Albuquerque police are searching.
Two National Guard helicopters were dispatched to join the search, but they have been limited by low clouds and rain.
