GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – A federal agency has cited Wal-Mart Stores Inc., for inadequate crowd management following last year's death of a temporary worker on Long Island.
OSHA, the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, said Tuesday Wal-Mart should have recognized the need to implement effective crowd management during its sales blitz the day after Thanksgiving. It says the world's largest retailer faces a $7,000 fine, but has 15 days to respond to the citation.
A company spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Jdimytai Damour, a temporary employee, had been on the job for about a week. He had no training in security or crowd control when an early morning crowd of about 2,000 broke down the Valley Stream store's doors. He was trapped in a vestibule where he was asphyxiated.
