ST. LOUIS – Homicide investigators in St. Louis say a woman killed in an argument with her husband was beaten to death with a hammer before her spouse fled and was later shot to death by police.
On Sunday, 37-year-old Luwonda Smith was found on the ground outside her home. Witnesses told police 42-year-old William Smith was the attacker.
About 90 minutes later, police found Smith at another home armed with knives in both hands and with several self-inflicted stab wounds.
Authorities say he stabbed himself in the chest then lunged at officers. One of the officers shot Smith, who died at a hospital.
An internal investigation is under way, but police say there is no indication the officer did anything wrong.
