A 300-pound brown bear has been tranquilized and taken away from a Camarillo apartment complex after keeping residents locked inside their homes for about an hour early Wednesday.

The bear was running back and forth in the center of the Avalon Camarillo Apartment complex at 6:40 a.m. and sheriff's deputies were called. Residents were told to stay inside their apartments.

Ventura County sheriff's Capt. Bill Ayubis says deputies surrounded the complex and a California Department of Fish and Game representative used a tranquilizer dart to subdue the bear about an hour later.

No one was hurt. The male bear was loaded into a truck and taken to a wilderness area.
