The operator of a Long Island day care center and her husband are accused of stashing an arsenal in the basement of the facility.
Kathryn and David Smith pleaded not guilty to illegal weapons possession and conspiracy charges at their arraignments Tuesday in Suffolk County Court in Riverhead. They were released without bail.
Prosecutors say the weapons belonged to the woman's 28-year-old son, an alleged member of the Bloods street gang. They say the son, Anthony Sands, had the weapons moved from his Central Islip home to his mother's home in Huntington, which serves as licensed day care center.
The couple's attorney says they had no idea what was inside the bag. Prosecutors say it contained handguns, shotguns and ammunition. The daycare center has been closed.
