Mexico said it was winning the battle against a deadly new strain of flu as it stayed largely shut for business and cases dropped but global health officials warned against complacency.

However Portugal confirmed on Monday its first case of a new strain of flu, Health Minister Ana Jorge said.

NOTES:

— Mexico cut its suspected death toll from the H1N1 flu to 101 from as many as 176, as dozens of test samples came back negative. Of the deaths that have emerged in Mexico, 25 have been confirmed by the WHO as from H1N1.
