The Navy's newest guided missile destroyer was commissioned Saturday at the Charleston Naval Weapons Station.
The destroyer Truxton was commissioned during a morning ceremony, after which it was scheduled to return to its homeport in Norfolk, Va.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports the vessel, which is more than 500 feet long, can fight air, surface and underwater battles at the same time. The ship has a crew of 265.
Capt. Timothy Weber says he asked that the vessel be commissioned in South Carolina. Weber spent time in the Lowcountry growing up.
