A Danish shipper says one of its cargo ships has escaped an attempted hijacking in the pirate-infested waters off Somalia.

Shipcraft Chief Executive Per Nykjaer Jensen says the M.V. Puma immediately called the multination anti-piracy task force in the area for help.

Nykjaer Jensen says the ship zigzagged to avoid a speedboat carrying five armed pirates. He says the crew fired a distress flare toward the pirates to slow them down. A task force helicopter rushed to the scene to chase the pirates away.

Nykjaer Jensen says the crew of three Danes and four Filipinos were not injured.

Friday's episode was the latest hijacking attempt by bandits who have made the Gulf of Aden the world's most dangerous waterway.
