Deaths of 2 Michigan Children Blamed on Flu

The state says two children from the Detroit area who died earlier this month had influenza B.

The Michigan Department of Community Health said Wednesday the Oakland County medical examiner will make the final call on what killed a 6-year-old Clarkston girl and a 5-year-old Highland boy.

A cause of death for either child hasn't been determined.

The county's health division says influenza contributed to the girl's death, and the boy may have had a respiratory infection compounded by asthma. The children died April 4.

The Detroit News reports one child in Michigan has died of the flu this season, a 2 1/2-month-old girl from Kalamazoo.
