Authorities are searching for a gunman who shot a teen in front of a California high school, the Los Angeles Police Department told FOX News.

Shots were fired outside Locke High School in south Los Angeles at about 7:54 a.m. local time. The suspect reportedly walked up to the student in front of the school, shot him in the upper body and then fled.

Police said the victim was taken by ambulance to a hospital and is in stable but critical condition. It is unclear whether the suspect is a student.

The suspect was described as a male Hispanic, about 5'6" tall and weighing about 150 pounds. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and was last seen in a gray Chevrolet Tahoe.
