A father and Azeri immigrant in the Russian city of Saint Petersburg was arrested and charged with hiring two hit men to kill his 21-year-old daughter – for wearing a mini-skirt.
Local police and the Agence France-Presse reported that the arrest came after two other Azeri citizens confessed to murdering the woman, who was a medical student.
A police source told the AFP that, “They admitted to being paid $4,140 by the girl’s father. They said he wanted to punish his daughter for flouting national traditions and wearing a mini-shirt.”
Another source told the AFP that the girl was abducted from Saint Petersburg’s streets and taken outside the city where she was shot in the head two times.
Since the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia has seen a conservative movement sweep through both of its large Russian Orthodox and Muslim communities, resulting in a culture clash that is new to the ex-communist country, AFP reported.
