A regional official says students protesting proposed reforms have stormed the offices of a university in the northwestern city of Rennes and are holding its president hostage.
Edith Arzic of the regional prefecture said several dozen people stormed the office of the president of Rennes 2 University on Monday afternoon.
Arzic says the president, Marc Gontard, has requested the police to intervene to free him but that police have not yet taken any action.
The university has been paralyzed by strikes for several weeks. Classes resumed on Monday morning following a vote in which student protesters overwhelmingly rejected the campus closure.
Students around the country have been demonstrating against the proposed university reform.
