FRANKFURT – The German government says Chancellor Angela Merkel is making an unannounced visit to Afghanistan.
A government spokesman says on condition of anonymity Monday, in line with department policy, that the chancellor is visiting German military bases in the country. He declined to give further details on the trip.
Germany has some 3,800 troops in Afghanistan, where they are deployed in the relatively peaceful north.
Merkel stressed on Friday that "we want to carry our share of the responsibility — militarily, in the area of civil reconstruction and in police training."
