A mystery is brewing surrounding the suspicious death of a U.S. Marine Corps member who was found dead at an Iraq-based military facility from a single shot to the back of the head, according to WPLG.

The United States Department of Defense announced the death of 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Nelson M. Lantigua of Miami, Fl., Thursday, WPLG reported. He was stationed in the Anbar province of Iraq.

Lantigua's body was found with a single bullet wound to the back of the head in a bed inside of the military base to which he was assigned.

U.S. military officials have called Lantigua's death the result of a non-hostile incident, according to WPLG. The incident is under investigation and no other detils have been released.

Milagro Santos, a relative of Lantigua, was surpised to learn of her cousin's death just a few days before he was scheduled to return home, WPLG reported.

“He was going to be here Monday and it’s just shocking how he was going to be here so fast and then that happened," Santos said.
