The Cannes Film Festival runs May 13-24, and had been at a low ebb excitement-wise until the announcement that the word's most famous actor and one of its most-respected directors were coming to the rescue.

Tarantino's World War II action film has been described as "Pulp Fiction" meets "The Dirty Dozen," with Pitt leading a team of Jewish-American commandos into battle with the Nazis.

Tarantino won the Palm D'Or, the festival's prize for best picture, in 1994 with "Pulp Fiction." Pitt and Angelina Jolie are regulars at the festival.
