A New York woman mysteriously died at a New York hospital where she was seeking treatment for an upset stomach, MyFOXNY.com reported.
Christine Rivera, 33, who lived in an assisted living center, was vomiting when she took an ambulance to Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. She called her sister, Elizabeth, who spoke to the emergency room doctor by phone to explain that Rivera need special care.
Rivera suffered from seizures, was bipolar and schizophrenic, so she was placed in the hospital’s psychiatric unit. When her family arrived, Rivera was covered in bruises. Within two days, Rivera was brain dead. Now, the family is awaiting an autopsy, which should provide a cause of death.
“Everyone at Beth Israel involved in Ms. Rivera’s care extends their deepest condolences to her family,” read a statement from Beth Israel Medical Center. “Beth Israel fully embraces a policy of complete disclosure with regard to the care we provide. To this end, we have met with Ms. Rivera’s family and have reviewed with them all that we know to date about the care provided to her. We are working with the State Department of Health in reviewing this case.”
