Prosecutors have charged a nurse with stealing morphine by siphoning it from a dying woman's bedside at the University of Michigan hospital.

Washtenaw County authorities say 48-year-old Esther Najer used a syringe to steal the morphine four times Sept. 6 from the room of meningitis patient LaKrisha Dobbins.

Dobbins' mother, Janette Birton, says Najer entered her daughter's room and appeared to be checking whether the 26-year-old's intravenous drip was working. Dobbins died that day.

Najer lives in Willis and has no listed telephone number or lawyer of record. She hasn't been arraigned yet.

Hospital officials tell The Ann Arbor News Najer last worked at the hospital Sept. 7, but won't say more about her job status.
