NEW YORK – Married lesbian couples can now list both spouses as parents as soon as their children are born in New York City under new rules established this week.
Previously, the women had to go through an adoption process before both could be listed as the official parents.
The rules approved Tuesday by the New York City Board of Health follow similar changes New York state made in December after Gov. David Paterson ordered agencies to respect out-of-state gay marriages.
Those rules applied everywhere outside of New York City, which sets its own rules for vital statistics. Both policies allow lesbian couples to list both women as parents when one of them gives birth.
Married male couples still have to adopt their children in order to be officially declared their parents.
